AI technology could be combined with Ireland's existing road camera network to detect wrong-way motorway driving more quickly and improve safety warnings and emergency responses.
Ireland is considering the use of artificial intelligence alongside existing road cameras to improve the detection of vehicles travelling in the wrong direction on motorways. Minister of State for Road Safety Seán Canney raised the proposal following discussions involving An Garda Síochána, Transport Infrastructure Ireland and the Road Safety Authority, according to RTÉ News.
Ireland's motorway network already uses camera infrastructure to monitor road conditions and incidents, particularly on routes including the M50 and road networks around Cork. Canney said AI could potentially work alongside this infrastructure to help authorities detect dangerous activity more quickly and support faster alerts to road users and Gardaí.
Transport Infrastructure Ireland is responsible for managing Ireland's national road and motorway infrastructure. The wider discussions have also examined detection technology, warning signage and the potential role of new infrastructure in improving responses to wrong-way driving, with The Irish Times reporting that both immediate and longer-term technological measures are under consideration.
The health and safety significance lies in the time between a vehicle entering a motorway in the wrong direction and authorities becoming aware of the danger. Wrong-way driving presents an immediate risk of high-speed collisions, making early detection and rapid communication particularly important.
The potential use of AI could strengthen existing road safety systems by helping to identify abnormal driving behaviour more quickly. Rather than replacing cameras or existing control measures, the technology under consideration could potentially add another layer of monitoring to support faster decision-making and emergency response.
The issue has received increased attention following a rise in detected wrong-way driving incidents. The Irish Times reported that Transport Infrastructure Ireland's Motorway Operations Control Centre detected 62 wrong-way driving incidents during the first part of 2026, compared with 47 during the equivalent period in 2025.
For health and safety professionals, the proposal reflects a wider principle of preventative risk management: identifying a serious hazard earlier can create more opportunities to reduce exposure to harm. In this case, quicker detection could potentially support earlier warnings to motorists while allowing Gardaí and emergency responders to act with better information.
The proposal remains at an early stage. No nationwide AI detection system has been approved, and no technology supplier, procurement process, budget or implementation timetable has been announced. The RTÉ News report makes clear that AI is currently being considered as part of a broader discussion around potential road safety measures.
Technology is also only one part of the Government's response. Officials are examining stronger legislation and penalties for deliberate wrong-way driving, with The Irish Times reporting that tougher measures could be introduced before the end of the year. The final form and timing of any legislation, however, remain subject to the drafting and legislative process.
The broader opportunity is to combine technology with existing safety controls. Camera networks, warning systems, road design, Garda response and legislation each address different aspects of the risk. AI-assisted detection could potentially strengthen this system by reducing the time required to identify and respond to a developing incident.
For the sector, the lesson is direct: technology can strengthen health and safety systems when it improves the speed at which serious risks are identified and acted upon. Ireland's consideration of AI-assisted motorway monitoring demonstrates how existing infrastructure could potentially be enhanced to support earlier intervention and better protection for road users.
