New guidance tackles work-related road risks

Driving for work remains one of the highest-risk activities in business, with road collisions accounting for up to 40% of work-related deaths. A quarter of drivers involved in fatal crashes between 2019 and 2023 were on the job, most commonly men aged 36-55 behind the wheel of HGVs. The Health and Safety Authority’s new guidance, developed with An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority, calls on employers to embed safer driving policies into day-to-day operations. It outlines legal duties, practical risk management solutions, and ways to build a culture of road safety at work. The message is clear – road safety is a shared responsibility, and proactive management can save lives.
