Casting back at the Health & Safety Excellence Awards 2026, held on 30th April at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Santry, one of the retail sector's most thoughtfully executed safety initiatives was brought into the spotlight when Primark was named winner of the Health & Safety Excellence Award in the Retail category for its Operation Christmas Tree campaign.

Developed to address one of the most demanding periods in the retail calendar, Operation Christmas Tree was a targeted health and safety campaign designed to reduce colleague lost time injuries across Primark's Republic of Ireland market during peak trade. The timing was deliberate and significant. Peak trading periods in retail place considerable additional pressure on colleagues, increasing the frequency of manual handling tasks and the risk of the kind of incidents that cause lost time injuries. A proactive workplace safety intervention during precisely this window reflects both the strategic thinking and operational awareness behind the initiative.

The campaign reached colleagues through a combination of channels that were accessible, familiar, and suited to the pace of a busy retail environment. Manual handling refreshers reinforced practical safe working techniques at the point where they are most needed. Store huddles created space for direct conversation and shared ownership of safety goals among frontline colleagues. Primark's internal social media platform extended that reach across sites, building awareness of incident causes and reinforcing consistent safe working practices in a format that colleagues could engage with on their own terms.

The judging panel commended the meaningful involvement of shop floor employees throughout the initiative, noting that their role in building ownership and engagement was central to the campaign's success. In occupational health and safety, the difference between a compliance-driven initiative and a genuine safety culture shift often comes down to whether frontline employees feel ownership of the outcomes. Operation Christmas Tree achieved exactly that.

The results were clearly measured and consistently tracked, demonstrating the kind of disciplined safety management that the Health & Safety Excellence Awards exists to recognise and celebrate across Ireland's workplaces.

Stay tuned for the Health & Safety Excellence Awards 2027 cycle, where organisations from across Ireland will once again have the opportunity to showcase their commitment to workplace health and safety.
